Adelaide
From
the window of my train seat, I saw 2 kangaroos, 6 emus, a lot of
sheep (there are huge sheep ranches or “stations” all through
South Australia), some goats and cows (and black swans in
Adelaide). I'm officially in Australia.
The
Indian Pacific train is straight out of the 1940s or 50s, all lime
green and chrome. Mo, remember that trip we took in China 30 years
ago? This is that same train. We went through an amazing variety
of landscapes, from forests to vast wasteland and everything in
between. And now, Adelaide.
Adelaide
looks like it belongs in a snow globe. The old city is only a mile
square and 90% of the buildings were put up in the mid to
late 1800s. They're made of red brick and stone, in a variety of
fanciful Victorian styles, and everything
is under the protection of the National Historic Trust. I think
the phone booths have those royal blue ovals on them.
And
it is a quiet
little town. Everything that opens at all on Sunday closes by 5.
Trouble was, I got in at 6. No worries, got it all worked out. I'm
ensconced at the Adeliade Central Youth Hostel, found some Turkish
food for dinner and all is well.
